講題1:
Perspectives in Biomedical Engineering
生物醫學工程的現況和遠景

In the 21st century, the highest priority for most people is health. Biomedical engineering plays an important role in improving the health and quality of life of people. The analysis and synthesis of the vast amount of biomedical information generated by the dramatic progresses in modern biology require the application of new concepts and technologies in engineering. An integrative approach is essential for the elucidation of physiological regulation in health and the development of innovative methods for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.The integration requires interdisciplinary research and education at the interface of biology, medicine and engineering, the coordination of research across multiple scales in the biological hierarchy, and the synergism of science and technology with the ultimate aim of translation. The integration of research findings with the aid of systems biology has led to the generation of a cohesive body of knowledge through engineering analysis and network construction.

Integration of advances in science and technology, including fields such as drug delivery, nanomedicine, bioimaging, biomaterials, stem cells, regenerative medicine, non-invasive procedures, wireless health, etc., will lead to improvements in healthcare and its delivery. These approaches will allow the practice of individualized, preventative medicine that is patient-centered and cost-effective. The achievement of these promises and challenges requires the innovation from academia, its collaboration with industry and hospitals for translation, and the support by government and private foundations. Such collaborations in biomedical engineering among these different sectors will lead to the enhancements of health and quality of life of people.

在21世紀、人們都以健康作為最高的優先。生物醫學工程對人類的健康和生活品質有極重要的影響。由於近年來生物學的驚人進展、產生了大量的研究成果數據,亟需要用最新的工程方法和技術來作有效的分析。我們必須用整合性的步法來闡明健康時的生理調控原理,並發展新穎有效的方法耒診斷、治療、和預防疾病。這種整合需要用各種學科知識、在不同生物層次之間,做交叉性的研究。結合基礎研究和技術發展,以期轉移到臨床醫學或生技產業 。

用這樣的方法,可以促進各種領域的科技進展,例如藥物運送、奈米醫學、生物影像、生物材料、幹細胞、再生醫學、非侵入性的手術、無線健康等等,會導致健康照護及醫學保健的進步。這些方法使我們能作個人化、預防性的醫學,以病人為主、並低價高效;得以迎接挑戰、達成我們增進健康福祉的願望。要達到這些目的,必須要有學術界的創新,工業界、企業界和臨床醫師的合作轉移,也需要政府和私人基金會的資助。這些不同的業界,共同努力推進生物醫學工程,一定會增強人類的健康,改善我們的生活品質。



講題2:
Life and Science: A Case History and Some General Thoughts
生活與科學:一個案例與一些綜觀

In this presentation, I will first share with the science-talent young friends attending the WU Chien-Shiung Science Camp my personal life and my path to a career in science. Each person is different, and this case history is meant to be an illustration to bring out some general principles, but not as a model.
I will outline my early schooling in Shanghai during World War II, premed college study in Peking University, medical school education at National Taiwan University, and Ph.D. training in Physiology at Columbia University, followed by my career as a physiologist and bioengineer.
Life is full of different opportunities, and we have to make decisions and choices. While there are external factors that limit our options, we should always try to make the choice based on our compassion, i.e., to work on subjects that we love and do the best we can in pursuing excellence. It is important to have a clear direction in life and in scientific work; one should be perseverant, and yet adaptive. Be willing to meet challenges whenever there is an opportunity that suits our goal.

Endeavor to achieve success, but be able to accept failure and turn it into success next time. Be optimistic even under difficult circumstances; one is more likely to succeed when maintaining optimism and belief.
It is important to utilize our time effectively, maintaining a balance between our family and personal life with our career, as well as a balance between the big self (scientific community, institution, etc.) and our small self. People are the most precious element in life, whether at home or at work. We love our family, our colleagues, and all the people for whom our scientific work may contribute to their quality of life.

I would like to share with you the seven C's that can be valuable for our life and career. We must have compassion and commitment for whatever we choose to do. We need to comprehend what is known and what needs to be done and be creative in designing and executing our work with innovation. It is important to continuously improve our communication skills and to cooperate with others. Finally, we must complete whatever we set out to do. By pursuing what you choose to accomplish with a clear, realistic direction and by using these 7 C's, I strongly believe that you will have a successful career and a happy life.

在這場演講中,我會先跟在座參加吳健雄科學營的年輕朋友們分享我個人的生活經驗,以及我從事科學志業的歷程。每一個人有不同的性格、興趣、意願、機遇,不能一概而論。我的目的是由我個人的故事帶出一些普遍的原則,並非以此為範例。 我會由早年我在二次世界大戰時在上海的學校生活談起,接著在北京大學就讀醫科預校、在台灣大學接受醫學院教育、以及在哥倫比亞大學的生理學博士訓練,然後開始我的生理學及生物工程學的教學研究生涯。 我們一生充滿各種不同的機會,我們常常要做許多決定與抉擇。雖然外在的因素常會侷限我們的選擇,我們應該儘可能基於自己的衷心所愛,去從事喜歡做的研究題目, 盡力追求卓越。在生活中有明確的方向很重要,在科學研究工作上亦是如此。應該契而不捨,但也需隨時學習調整。當有一個機會符合我們的目標,應該樂於接受挑戰。

努力不懈實現成功的理想,但也要有接受失敗的胸懷而且從失敗中記取教訓、在下次逆轉成功。即使在困難的情況下也要保持樂觀;一個常保樂觀與信念的人、比較容易成功。

我要跟各位分享7個C,這幾個字可能對我們的生活與事業都會有用。無論我們選擇做什麼,都必須有熱愛(compassion)與承諾(commitment)。也要瞭解(comprehend)哪些是已知的學問,哪些領域還需要繼續探索,用創意(creative)去設計並執行我們的創新工作。我們要持續不斷地增進自己的溝通(communication)技巧,以及與他人合作(cooperate)。最後,我們必須完成(complete)自己設定的目標。透過運用這7個C,找到一個明確又實際的方向追求你所愛並完成,我深信你將會有成功的事業與幸福的生活。
